Vineyard Update

Over the winter months vineyard manager Greg Nikulinsky has been busy supervising the pruning of our 22 hectares of vines in order to prepare them for next season's crop. During the cold months grapevines become dormant and do not photosynthesize as they have no leaves. They do, however, maintain basic metabolic functions. Now that we are in the transition from winter to spring we begin to see the first stirrings of new growth. This is called budburst. The buds that we retained from last season begin to grow and leaves begin to expand. Below is a very recent photo of some of our Chenin Blanc vines showing the beginnings of budburst.

We have almost completed pruning for this season.  Below is a photo of some of our Sauvignon Blanc vines that are yet to be finished. In this photo you can see that the canes have been cut but have not yet been removed from the wires. Once removed the remaining canes will be wrapped and tied down  to the fruiting wires in preparation for the onset of spring.
